Squaring the big circle
This comes from the Signed With An Owl blog.
Makes 8 inch/ 21 cm square
The original pattern is written in US terms so I have changed it to UK below.
Requires
- DK yarn – I’m using Stylecraft double knit special
- 4mm hook
Abbreviations
- sl st: slip stitch
- ch: chain
- dc: double crochet
- htr: half treble crochet
- tr: treble crochet
- dtr; double treble crochet (one extra yarn round hook than a normal tr)
Pattern
Join each round with a slip stitch, then fasten off.
Change colour each round (except rounds 7 to 9)
- Into a magic loop work, 3 ch, (first tr) 1 tr, 1 ch, *2 tr, 1 ch* repeat ** 4 times – you will have 6 groups of 2 tr separated by 1 ch.
- Into each 1 ch space work 2 tr, 1 ch, 2 tr, 1 ch. (12 groups of 2 tr)
- Into each 1 ch space work 3 tr, 1 ch. (12 groups of 3 tr)
- Into each 1 ch space work 2 tr, 1 ch, 2 tr, 1 ch (24 groups of 2 tr)
- Into each 1 ch space work 2 tr, 1 ch, (24 groups of 2 tr)
- Into each 1 ch space work 3 tr, 1 ch. (24 groups of 3 tr)
- Into each 1 ch space work 1 dc, 3 ch. (24 groups of 3 tr) DON’T fasten off
- Sl st into 3 ch space, 1 ch, 3 dc, 1 ch
- *into next 3 ch space, 2 dc, 1 htr, 1 ch
- into next 3 ch space, 1 htr, 2 tr, ch 1
- into next 3 ch space, 3 dtr, 2 ch, 3 dtr, 1 ch (corner made)
- in next 3 ch space, 2 tr, 1 htc, 1 ch
- in next 3 ch space, 1 htc, 2 dc, 1 ch
- in next 3 ch space, 3 dc, 1 ch
- repeat from *around, join with sl st in first dc, DON’T fasten off
- Sl st in next two dc, sl st in next 1 ch space, 3 ch, 2 tr, 1 ch then work round
- in each 1 ch space, 3 tr, 1 ch
- and in corner spaces 3 tr, 1 ch, 3 tr, 1 ch
- sl st in first tr, fasten off.
It can be enlarged by repeating Round 9. For example to make a 12 inch / 30 cm square I added another 4 rows.
A smaller 6 inch / 15 cm version can be made by following the first 3 rounds, and then going straight to round 9. Because of the size of the circle it is not necessary to add a gradated round.
