Two versions of a really simple pattern that can be adapted to fit any hand size. Once you have this under your belt you can adapt it to incorporate different stitches, for example swapping the main part to double crochet or incorporating popcorns or fans.

Introduction to Amigurumi
Amigurumi is the Japanese art of knitting or crocheting stuffed toys. There are no restrictions in size or set style despite the usual expectation that they will be small. The term is an merging of the words ami, meaning crocheted or knitted, and nuigurumi, meaning stuffed doll.

Twiddle muff
Twiddle muffs are some times used to help people with dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, autism or learning difficulties. The textures & embellishments give them something to do with their hands, distracting from picking at their skin or pulling at medical equipment and bandages. They are constructed as a muff rather than a blanket as they can be slipped onto an arm with less chance of being dropped.

Air drying clay
Some of my classes at the residential homes take a bit more preparation than others, especially if I am trying out a new material. One of the residents had said in a previous class that she had always wanted to work with clay. Now I’ve done some things with the standard air drying clay but it can be quite messy and I only have an hour session for each class.

These squares have been made in Stylecraft Special DK, the larger 30 cm /12 inch in Spice, the smaller 15 cm / 6 inch in Boysenberry. (It looks pinker in real life) I’ve done patterns for 2 different ways to do a popcorn stitch and for 2 different sizes.

Amigurumi Elephant
This was the first pattern used in the amigurumi class, it shows how using the same basic technique can make a variety of shapes. Elephant is approximately 19 cm / 7.5 inches tall when sat. (Also I put the legs and arms on in the wrong place, but had sewed them on to well to remove and set right) 😀
