These squares have been made in Stylecraft Special DK, the larger 30 cm /12 inch in Spice, the smaller 15 cm / 6 inch in Boysenberry. (It looks pinker in real life)
I’ve done patterns for 2 different ways to do a popcorn stitch and for 2 different sizes. The smaller one crocheted up a little tighter than normal so I added a border of 2 rows of double crochet to bring it up to size
Larger Granny Square
Abbreviations
- ch = chain;
- dc = double crochet
- tr = treble crochet
- st(s) = stitch (es)
Popcorn version 1= Work 4 tr in indicated stitch, drop loop from hook, insert hook in first of the 4 tr just made, return dropped loop to hook and draw it through, ch 1 to close popcorn.
Pattern
Ch 40 loosely.
Row 1 (wrong side): Working in back loop of each ch only, dc in 2nd ch from hook and in each remaining ch across, turn – 39 dc.
Row 2: Ch 3 (first tr), tr in next 2 sts, *popcorn in next st, tr in next 3 sts; repeat from * across, turn – 9 popcorns.
Row 3: Ch 1, dc in each tr and ch-1 space (at top of each popcorn) across, turn – 39 dc.
Row 4: Ch 3, popcorn in next st, *tr in next 3 sts, popcorn in next st; repeat from * to last st, dc in last st, turn – 10 popcorns.
Row 5: Repeat row 3.
Rows 6–35: Repeat rows 2 5, finishing with row 3. Weave in ends
This produces a nice popcorn effect, however I find it quite slow due the requirement to keep removing the hook.
Another version is to decrease 4 trebles but in the same stitch, it’s not quite as pronounced in a row of trebles, bu very effective in a row of double crochet. However if the whole square is rows of double crochet the square can look a little crammed full of bobbles. Therefore I swap the odd rows 3, 5, 7 onward to half trebles.

Popcorn version 2 = *yarn round hook, insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn round hook, pull through 2 loops* repeat 3 times. You now have 5 loops on hook. Yarn round hook pull though all 5 loops.

Ch 20 loosely.
Row 1 (wrong side): Working in back loop of each ch only, htc in 3rd ch from hook and in each remaining ch across, turn – 19 htc.
Row 2: Ch (first dc), dc in next 2 sts, *popcorn in next st, dc in next 3 sts; repeat from * across, turn – 9 popcorns.
Row 3: Ch 2, htr in each st – 19 htc.
Row 4: Ch 1, popcorn in next st, *dc in next 3 sts, popcorn in next st; repeat from * to last st, dc in last st, turn – 10 popcorns.
Row 5: Repeat row 3.
Rows 6 – 18: Repeat rows 2 5, finishing with row 3. Weave in ends
