Tea bag hat variations

Something which I found is quite easy but immensely adaptable is the tea bag hat, so I offer these patterns during weeks 2 & 3 of the classes at The Wool Haven.

All are made with half treble crochets worked into the back loop only.

Require

4mm hook

DK wool amount depends on size – no more than 100g

Adult tea-bag hat with turn up

This is the simplest of the 3 versions, and can be easily adjusted to fit any size head. It is very stretchy as it only has a turn up rather than a band.

Can also be adapted into a Pussycat Hat by sewing across each corner to make ears.

Size: 48 cm/ 18 inch diameter (stretches to 71 cm / 28 inches), length 25 cm / 10 inch

Foundation chain – 40 chain

Row 1: skip 1st chain, then half treble crochet (htc) in the back loop ONLY of the “v” to end of row

Row 2 – 50: Chain 1, then htc into the back loop only to end of row.

Row 51: Join to foundation using dc, then continue along top edge to make a square bag.

Fasten off & weave in ends.

Turn up edge to form band.

Infant pompom hat

Size: 29 cm/ 11 inch diameter (stretches to 35 cm /14 inch), height 12 cm / 5 inch

Foundation chain – 20 chain

Row 1: skip 1st chain, then half treble crochet (htc) in the back loop ONLY of the “v” to end of row

Row 2 – 23: Chain 1, then htc into the back loop only to end of row.

Row 24: Join to foundation chain with double crochet (dc).

Band

Continuing from join dc around band (36 stitches.)

Second row: htc into previous row (36 stitches)

Fasten off & weave in ends

Then take double thickness of yarn & weave through crown stitches & pull tight to close. Fasten securely & weave in ends

Make bobble and attach.

Child Hat (striped with curly-cues)

Size: 48 cm/ 18 inch diameter, height 19 cm / 7 1/2 inch

Foundation chain – Colour A: 27 chain

Row 1: skip 1st chain, then half treble crochet (htc) in the back loop ONLY of the “v” to end of row

Row 2: Chain 1, then htc into the back loop only to end of row.

Row 3 – 4, change to colour B, Chain 1, then htc into the back loop only to end of row.

Row 5 – 6, change to colour C, Chain 1, then htc into the back loop only to end of row.

Row 7 – 8, change to colour A, Chain 1, then htc into the back loop only to end of row.

Repeat rows 3 – 8 another 6 times.

Repeat row 3 – 6 once

Final row in Colour A join to foundation, then continue along top edge in dc to make a square bag. Fasten off

Band

In Colour C, work 72 dc around brim.

Second row: change to Colour B, dc into previous row

Third row: change to Colour C, dc into previous row.

Fasten off & weave in ends

Make curly-cues is the three colours and fasten to corners.
