This is the third time I’ve brought beads into the residential care homes as it a project that usually goes down well.
Over the previous attempts I have got better at sourcing suitable materials. The black 1mm elastic I use is easy for them to grip and see and ties securely.
The key is to get beads with around a 4mm centre hole for ease of threading. Glass beads look nice but due to them being coated (for the colour) the holes can be blocked. Wooden beads are lighter, and work well as long as the hole is drilled big enough.
I don’t use plastic as I never want the residents to feel like they are being treated like children.
We had some beads left over from previous sessions which broadened the choice and many did use them in a mix and match way.
As always, here is the gallery….
